Length of Service

Rob: Just read somewhere that soldiers of the NKVD Internal Troops had to do a minimum of two years service in the RKKA before they could be accepted into the NKVD. Is this true?

Александр Шатулин: This is not true, the NKVD units staffed the same way as the RKKA ones, but with more exacting selection.

Rob: Thanks again - I thought it seemed like a strange idea! Another question is with regards to the wearing of Furazhkas - was it usual to see enlisted soldiers (radavoi, yefreitors) wearing them during a normal working day? I'm guessing that in combat situations, they'd wear a pilotka or field furashka.

Александр Шатулин: Rob пишет: was it usual to see enlisted soldiers (radavoi, yefreitors) wearing them during a normal working day? Yes, especially in peacetime.

Rob: One last question on hats! What did women in the NKVD wear for head gear? Was it just a dark blue beret or pilotka?

Александр Шатулин: Beret was a regulation headgear, but pilotka was often worn.

Rob: What a beautiful girl! One member in our group has a huge collection of original GPW photographs, and when going through them we always wonder (and indeed hope) if the people in them survived the war.
