NKVD I.D book

Rob: Can anyone tell me anything about this I.D book, and what branch of the NKVD the owner was in?

Александр Шатулин: I don't know how to translate it correctly. A verbatim translation is the Department of Special sections. It means an army security service. Also I don't know, is it original or fake...

Тов.Рязанцев: Rob, I think you know the "СМЕРШ" - "SMERSH" that meant "Cмерть шпионам" - "Death to the spyes"? This was counter-intelligence service in Red Army, the same service was in NKVD.

Rob: I have heard of the Special Sections - I read that one of their duties was to search all the soldiers belongings and pockets before a battle so that they weren't carrying anything that could be a security risk. Edit: Interesting! I thought that SMERSH was entirely NKVD, so the SMERSH officers in 'В августе 44-го' were RKKA SMERSH? I remember one good scene in this film when Kapitan Alyokhin simply holds up his card to this angry General Maior who goes pale and salutes! (My copy has no subtitles - but this is good for learning Russian, since mine is still very very basic! )

Александр Шатулин: In 1943 NKVD was divided into: - NKVD - NKGB (State Security) - Army counterespionage service SMERSH subordinate to NKO (Narkomat Oborony (Defense)) - Navy counterespionage service SMERSH subordinate to NKVMF (Narkomat Voenno-Morskogo Flota (Navy)) NKVD troops and RKM had got their own counterespionage service SMERSH subordinate to NKVD. In 1946 all counterespionage services were subordinated to MGB (Ministry of State Security).

Rob: And before 1943 I'm guessing counter intelligence was dealt with by the Treetyi Otdyell of the GUGB?

Александр Шатулин: September 1938 - 4th section (otdel) of GUGB February 1941 - section divided into 3rd department (upravlenie) of NKO, 3rd department of NKVMF, 3rd section of NKVD July 1941 - all they combined into Department of Special Sections (Upravlenie osobykh otdelov - UOO) of NKVD (3rd dept. of NKVMF was included in 1942) April 1943 - UOO NKVD divided into Main Department of counter intelligence SMERSH of NKO, Department of counter intelligence SMERSH of NKVMF May 1943 - Section of counter intelligence SMERSH of NKVD established May 1946 - army and navy counter intelligence combined into 3rd Main Department of MGB (former NKGB), MVD (former NKVD) counter intelligence section preserved http://russiamilitaria.ru/index.php?showtopic=274&st=0& с 29 сентября 1938 года - 4-й отдел ГУГБ НКВД СССР с 26 февраля 1941 года - 3-е управление НКО СССР, 3-е управление НКВМФ СССР, 3-й отдел НКВД СССР с 31 июля 1941 года - управление особых отделов НКВД СССР с 19 апреля 1943 года - Главное управление контрразведки «Смерш» НКО СССР, управление контрразведки «Смерш» НКВМФ СССР, отдел контрразведки «Смерш» НКВД СССР с 4 мая 1946 года - 3-е Главное управление МГБ СССР и отдел контрразведки МВД СССР

Rob: A question about individual SMERSH units... How were they organised? Were they small teams of officers and NCO's who would travel from unit to unit making investigations?

Александр Шатулин: There were SMERSH section in every brigade, division, corps etc. and SMERSH officers in regiments and battalions. There were also: - rifle battalions attached to front SMERSH sections - rifle companies attached to army SMERSH sections - rifle platoons (15 men) attached to corps SMERSH sections - rifle squads (8 men) attached to brigade and division SMERSH sections These rifle platoons and squads were formed in August of 1944.
