Rob: I read that this NKVD unit fought with great bravery on the Mamayev Kurgan during the Stalingrad battle - does anyone have more details about the unit, and what happened to it there?

Александр Шатулин: Initially Stalingrad garrison included: - 10th NKVD rifle division (269th, 270th, 271st, 272nd, 282nd rifle regts) under the command of colonel A. A. Saraev, who was also garrison's commander - 21st and 28th training tank battalions (2500 men, approximately 20 tanks) - Two battalions of cadets (1000 men) - 32nd combined detachment of Volga river military flotilla (220 men) - 73rd NKVD armoured train - combined battalion of 91st NKVD railroad guard regt - 249 NKVD convoy regt - fighter battalions (local militia) Approximately 15000-16000 men total. Some antiaircraft units must be added to this "OOB". Combat operations near the sity started August 23rd, 1942 after the Soviet frontline was broked by German troops. 282nd regt defended northern suburbs from the end of August to the middle of October. 272nd regt defended northwestern suburbs in early September, after 06/09/42 it was removed from the frontline, reinforsed with Stalingrad workers. On September 14 the regt participated in unsuccessful counterattack. Later the regt defended the positions southward of Mamayev Kurgan and the railroad bridge over Tsaritsa river. 269th regt defended Mamayev Kurgan in the middle of September, later participated in actions near "Krasny Oktyabr" factory. 270th regt defended southwestern suburbs and the railroad bridge over Tsaritsa river in the middle of September. 271th regt defended southern suburbs in early September. According to some sources the division's casualties overrun 90%.
