Redstar: Comrades: I would like to know more about your NKVD reenactment unit. I like in the United States and recently have started reenacting WWII Red Army. I would like to have an altenate impression as NKVD and would like to get all the information regarding the NKVD unforms worn, internal troops in combat, blocking detactments, etc ... My Email address is VrGr5@camtel.net Comrade Grantsky

Òîâ.Ðÿçàíöåâ: Hello Redstar! You can ask any questions here or send email to my box nkvd_group@mail.ru ... I put your email in my address book and will send you email soon. For the first info I can say that uniform of frontline NKVD troopers was very close to Red Army uniform and in case you do reenacting for 43-45 period, you can easy use one tunic (gimnastyorka), trousers (sharovary) and sidecap (pilotka) both for RA and NKVD uniform as well as field gear and footwear too. I will be need only to change shoulder-plates (pogony).

Redstar: Comrades: I am trying to find the correct Red Army underwear, both winter and summer issue. Also the footwraps, the ones here in the United States are too short. As for NKVD, what type of shoulder boards are appropriate for NKVD field uniforms for the enlisted men. Trident Military has the ones that are field grey with blue piping, for interior troops, maroon with blue piping; or the blue boards with maroon piping. As with the NKVD frontier troops who preferred to wear their visored peaked caps instead of the pilotka or helmet, did the interior troops preferr to wear the blue and maroon visored peaked cap. Comrade Grantsky

Òîâ.Ðÿçàíöåâ: I can try to see underwear here, it will be post-war issue, but till 80’s it practically had no changes, we use same, and, of course, the real war period things is rare... What size do you need? You can use US sizes - Large Long, Small short, etc. Short footwrape - is the Soviet Marines type (if they are native Soviet ). Try to associate with any Red Army reenactment group in States - I saw mostly they have normal (high) footwrape - so, they have a source of them... For early period (1941) try to find a leather («yalovie»), not erzats footwrape («kirzachi»). NKVD frontline troops wore field type of uniform, wich had shoulder board with green (field green or olive-drab and the same color) field and maroon piping. Not frontline troops wore both field and regular type of uniform. With regular uniforn worn boards with maroon field and blue (it was not the same blue as airforce blue - it was cornflower blue). For this type of boards used not green button, but «gold». As for visor cap - it was defined by situation. The frontline troops preferred not to used the colored cap, but the all green wool field type visor cap. (NKVD frontiers had, and now have, the visor cap with colors, close to camo - green and dark-blue). But in the rear areas NKVD officers preffered to wore the colored visor cap.

Òîâ.Ðÿçàíöåâ: This is picture made by Andrey Karaschuk, the military-historical painter and reenactor. His images are always correct and well made. This one was made for the 1/35 scale soldiers box. Colors are very close to the right (as correct as possible for printing on box - little deviations from original). Here you can see the regular type of 1943 pattern uniform.

Redstar: Comrades: Thank you for reply in my response on Red Army underwear. I am not to familiar with clothing size in the Russian Army, I will find out from the political commissar with the 8th Guards, Comrade Julia, she is from St. Petersburg. What are the prices for the sets, both top and bottom. I was impressed with the drawing by Andrey Karaschuk, I have seen his art on some Red Army model boxes. I noticed that the NKVD troops in his drawing were regular NKVD troops, with the shoulder boards that are maroon with blue piping. What type of NKVD troops does your group portray, frontline troops or regular interior troops. Comrade Grantsky

Àëåêñàíäð Øàòóëèí: Original interior troops shoulder boards:

Redstar: Comrades: Thank you for the picture of the NKVD shoulder boards. I noticed that in the picture by Andrey Karaschuk, that the enlisted NKVD soldiers were wearing the blue and red visored cap. Was there a lot of this practice. Also do the members of your NKVD reenactment group or any other reenactment group own your own weapons or do you have to have a special permit. Anyway, I can get the NKVD sholder boards from Trident Military and I have a NKVD visored cap that I bought from Russian Arsenal, they are in Ukraine. Comrade Grantsky

Redstar: Comrades: I would like to get the proper NKVD paybook, Identification book and ration book issued to enlisted NKVD personnel. Richard Grant a.k.a. Comrade Grantsky
